Skills shortage is main challenge for in house recruiters in 2024

Last week, recruitment professionals at the IHR Live event in Manchester voted Skills Shortages as their key current challenge. ResourceBank ran a snap poll of visitors to their stand. 35% of recruiters selected Skills Shortage followed by 19% selecting how to use AI/Technology.

The In House Recruitment (IHR) Live Manchester event took place at the Victoria Warehouse on 16th May and attracted over 500 recruitment and talent attraction professionals. As a key outsourced recruitment partner to many TA professionals, ResourceBank exhibited and ran our “Key challenge” poll. The full results were:

Charlotte Todd-Smith, Client Development Manager for ResourceBank said:

Skills shortages were mentioned by most TA professionals that we spoke to. Specifically, they find recruiting engineering, tech, and IT skills challenging. AI was discussed but many in-house TA managers believe the personal touch they give to hiring managers and candidates is what counts – and AI can’t replace this.  The key is to use AI to complement, to take away the leg work giving TA professionals the opportunity and time for human interaction”

The caution over AI was summed up well during the final “Talent Trends for 2024” session by Andrew Fisher, Senior Talent Recruiter for Kellanova. He said;

“We all need to remember how talented we are as recruiters. No system on the planet can replace or navigate the skilled conversations we as people recruiters do daily.”

Other key points from the “Talent Trends for 2024” session included:

  • Sharing questions before the interview levels the field for neuro-diverse candidates
  • CVs are dead – it’s only a matter of time
  • Hybrid working is here for the foreseeable future
  • Tik tok is the fastest-growing recruitment channel

The event is one of a series run by IHR, a community of over 20,000 TA professionals

Charlotte concluded;

“It was an excellent event. great talks, great venue and a great vibe! We really enjoyed being an event partner and talking to so many enthusiastic TA professionals. We are now looking forward to follow up discussion and exploring how we can help the organisations we met with our range of outsourced recruitment and engagement services.”
