Application volumes are rising — fast.
Across sectors, recruitment teams are dealing with more candidates, more complexity, and higher expectations than ever before. But while the landscape has changed, many hiring processes haven’t.
At ResourceBank, we believe the answer isn’t just more resource — it’s smarter use of technology.
Our approach to AI-enabled recruitment has recently been recognised through our shortlisting for the Best Use of AI at the In-house Recruitment Supplier Awards — reflecting the impact of how we apply technology in real-world hiring environments.
That’s why throughout April, we’re focusing on what “Hi-Tech recruitment” actually looks like in practice — and how different technologies can be applied to solve different recruitment challenges.
The Challenge: When Volume Becomes Unmanageable
For organisations hiring at scale, success can quickly create new problems.
At World Duty Free, application volumes increased significantly across multiple locations and roles. While this was a positive sign of employer demand, it created real operational pressure:
- Recruiters overwhelmed by application screening
- Slower response times to candidates
- Increased risk of inconsistency
- Candidate experience beginning to suffer
Put simply, the traditional approach couldn’t keep up.
The Turning Point: Process First, Technology Second
Rather than simply adding more resource, we worked with World Duty Free to take a more structured approach:
Redesign the recruitment process first — then apply the right technology
This involved:
- Mapping the full candidate journey
- Identifying bottlenecks (particularly at screening and communication stages)
- Defining where automation and insight could add value
- Ensuring governance and consistency across the processPut simply, it creates the conditions for candidates to perform at their best.
Only then did we introduce a combination of AI-enabled tools, each aligned to a specific part of the hiring journey.
The Solution: Applying the Right Technology to the Right Problem
There isn’t a single “AI solution” to recruitment.
Instead, different technologies play different roles:
- Application screening and high-volume processing
→ AI-enabled tools such as Hubert to review and prioritise candidates quickly and consistently - Candidate relationship management and workflow automation
→ Platforms like Avature enabling structured, scalable recruitment processes - Interview insight and quality improvement
→ Tools such as Metaview providing visibility into interview performance and decision-making
By combining these technologies, we were able to create a recruitment process that was both efficient and controlled.
The Result: Measurable Impact at Scale
With the right technology applied in the right places, the impact was both immediate and measurable.
At World Duty Free, this approach delivered:
- A 35% increase in the number of candidates screened per week, significantly improving the team’s ability to manage high application volumes
- A reduction in time to shortlist from around two days to just 35 minutes, dramatically accelerating the early stages of the hiring process
- A 25% improvement in the quality of candidates reaching assessment stage, demonstrating that the process wasn’t just faster — it was more effective
- Over 3,000 hours of recruiter time saved, enabling teams to shift focus away from manual screening and towards higher-value activity
This shift had a direct impact on the overall hiring experience.
Both candidate satisfaction and hiring manager satisfaction improved by over 10%, reinforcing that efficiency gains were matched by a more engaging and effective recruitment process.
Ultimately, the result was a recruitment model that was not only faster and more scalable, but also higher quality, more consistent, and more aligned to both business needs and candidate expectations.
What This Means for Employers
If your organisation is experiencing:
- Rising application volumes
- Pressure on recruitment teams
- Challenges maintaining candidate experience
Then AI should be part of the conversation.
But success doesn’t come from adopting tools quickly —
it comes from implementing them in a structured, joined-up way.
What’s Coming Next
This is the first in our April series exploring Hi-Tech recruitment in practice.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing:
- How AI is transforming early careers recruitment
- What works (and what doesn’t) when implementing AI
- Lessons learned from real-world delivery
We’ll also be hosting a live webinar in May, where we’ll explore how these technologies work together in practice — and how to apply them effectively within your own recruitment strategy.
