AI-Enhanced Recruitment: How ResourceBank built a human-led approach to RPO

How ResourceBank built an AI-enhanced approach to recruitment that keeps people at the centre. Read the story behind our Hi-Tech, Hi-Touch model.
AI-Enhanced Recruitment: a robotic hand and a human hand reaching toward each other, symbolising the balance between AI and human judgement.

AI-Enhanced Recruitment addresses a challenge many recruitment teams were facing. Good candidates were dropping out of hiring processes, not because they weren’t interested, but because engagement wasn’t always happening quickly enough. Recruiters were spending significant amounts of time on administrative tasks rather than focusing on candidate relationships and hiring decisions. At the same time, many AI recruitment solutions were prioritising speed and automation, often without striking the right balance between efficiency and the human elements that make recruitment successful.

So, the team asked a different question. Not “should we use AI”, but “where would it actually make things better, for recruiters, for hiring managers, and for the people applying?”

That question is the reason we are here.

What is AI-enhanced recruitment, and why does it matter?

AI-enhanced recruitment means using technology to handle the repetitive, time-consuming parts of hiring, screening, scheduling, note-taking, so the people running the process can spend their time where it actually counts: talking to candidates, advising hiring managers, and making the calls that shape whether someone’s the right fit.

It’s a simple idea, but it’s much harder to do well. Most AI recruitment tools are built to move fast, not to feel human. That’s the gap ResourceBank set out to close, years before “AI in recruitment” became something every business was suddenly talking about.

How we started using AI in recruitment

There was no single decision, no big launch moment. It started with a small team within ResourceBank mapping out our recruitment process end to end, client by client, looking for opportunities to improve the experience and identifying the points where progress slowed or friction occurred.

Then came the less glamorous part: research. Reviewing what capability already existed inside tools like Avature. Sitting through demonstrations from specialist AI providers. Testing use cases against real recruitment scenarios, not hypothetical ones. Some ideas didn’t survive that process. Others were refined, tested again, and refined further.

“We didn’t implement AI because it was fashionable. We implemented it because it solved real recruitment challenges for our clients and candidates. Every tool we use has been tested against one simple question: does it improve outcomes for people?” – Cat Moxey, Business Improvement & Systems Specialist, ResourceBank

That question, more than any piece of technology, is what shaped our approach.

A growth partnership: World Duty Free

Every idea needs somewhere to prove itself. For ResourceBank, one of the clearest examples has been World Duty Free, a client we’ve now partnered with for over 19 years, and one whose recruitment needs have grown and changed significantly across that time.

As our AI approach evolved, so did the tools supporting the World Duty Free partnership, including the introduction of AI-powered interview screening to help manage recruitment across multiple airports and retail locations. Rather than switching everything on at once, changes were tested carefully, on a smaller scale first, then expanded once the results held up.

According to Lesley Swidryk, co-lead on the World Duty Free account, the impact has been clear:

The biggest benefit AI has brought to our World Duty Free screening process is consistency. It gives every candidate the same opportunity to demonstrate their skills and experience, while giving us richer, more structed insight to make better informed decisions about who progress. It’s not replacing the recruiter; it’s helping us recruit more effectively and at scale.

Lesley Swidryk Account Manager, ResourceBank

That partnership’s impact was recognised beyond ResourceBank too. In 2025, ResourceBank and Hubert won Bronze for “Use of AI” at the In-house Recruitment Awards.

How we use AI-enhanced recruitment today

Years on, AI-powered assistants are part of how ResourceBank delivers recruitment across clients with very different needs, from high-volume, multi-site hiring to highly specialist, technical roles.

For a partnership like World Duty Free, that means:

  • Consistency – every candidate is assessed against the same core questions and criteria, reducing variation between screenings.
  • Better shortlisting decisions – the team can make informed choices about who progresses, rather than relying on CVs alone or a short screening call, unmanageable at World Duty Free’s application volumes with the size of team in place.
  • More time for what matters – reducing manual screening work frees the team to focus on engaging candidates and supporting hiring managers.
  • A more flexible candidate experience – candidates working shifts outside core hours can still move through the process at a time that works for them.
  • Scalability – particularly valuable for a business recruiting across multiple locations, departments and sites at once.

What hasn’t changed is the principle set out from the start. The technology handles the repetitive work. People make the decisions. As Cat puts it:

Quote from ResourceBank on AI-Enhanced recruitment: 'We didn't implement AI because it was fashionable, we implemented it because it solved real recruitment challenges for our clients and candidates.

That’s where ResourceBank’s Hi-Tech, Hi-Touch philosophy really came from. Not AI instead of people, and not people refusing to use AI, but the two working together: technology handling the repetitive work, people handling everything that requires judgement, empathy and relationship building.

What this means if you’re considering AI in your own hiring

If your business is weighing up AI in recruitment, the temptation is to start with the technology, which tool, which vendor, which feature looks most impressive. That’s not where ResourceBank started, and it’s not where we’d advise you start either.

We began with a question, not a purchase: where is this actually costing us good candidates or good recruiters time? We then tested on a smaller scale before expanding them. Neither approached AI as something to switch on and hope for the best.

If you’re asking where AI might genuinely help your own hiring process, that’s the same question worth starting with. Not every AI recruitment tool is worth adopting. The businesses getting this right are the ones testing deliberately, not adopting for the sake of it.

Frequently asked questions

1. Does AI replace the recruiter in the hiring process?

No. AI-powered assistants handle repetitive tasks like screening and scheduling. The people making hiring decisions are exactly that, people.

2. How long has ResourceBank been using AI in recruitment?

The approach has developed over several years, expanding and evolving as new capabilities and client needs come along.

3. Is the same AI approach used for every client?

No. How AI-powered assistants are used is tailored to each client’s hiring volume, role types and business needs. It’s not a one-size-fits all rollout.

4. Are candidates told when AI is part of the process?

Yes. Transparency with candidates has been a non-negotiable part of the approach from day one.

5. Does AI improve candidate experience, or just speed?

Both, when it’s done properly. Candidates get faster responses and more flexible interview options, without losing the human conversation that matter most.

The businesses getting AI right in recruitment aren’t necessarily the ones who moved fastest. They’re the ones who kept asking the question ResourceBank started with years ago: does this make things better for people involved, recruiters, hiring managers, and candidates alike?
